The first round of the challenge begins Sept 12 and submissions close March 26 2012. most promising ideas/examples will be posted on the Potentiality Showcase website on April  16 2012. You can register a team now and We’ll give you your very own page here on the site.

Time and resources required to participate

You can expect to spend 1 an hour a week over the 8 week challenge period to move through the entire process using the free self paced online course. You can just do it your own way in a shorter period and simply upload a presentation that fits the brief. Most of the task including the preparation can be flipped and student led. The teacher/facilitator’s role is as a guide throughout the challenge.

The challenge is tied to 21st Century student outcomes

Teachers and others who work with young people have a great opportunity to engage their students in a real life challenge. The Reinventing School challenge is hands on, encourages discussion of the issues facing learners today and empowers young people, teachers and other members of the community to come up with solutions and share them for all to benefit.

In recent times there has been a renewed focus globally on the 3 R’s – reading, writing, and arithmetic, however if our young people are to fully participate in today’s global community, students must also master the 4 C’s – creativitycritical thinkingcommunication, and collaboration. The Reinventing School Challenge enables students to explore all 4 C’s  from the P21 framework while learning by doing. Below are the key areas that the challenge addresses. The following excerpt is taken from the definitions on the 4 C’s.

Participant benefits

Participants will be challenged to solve authentic, real-world problems while learning and doing.

During the challenge they will experience;

  • Design Thinking methodology and critical thinking
  • Branding, design and rapid prototyping
  • The magic of diversity in teams
  • Brainstorming and other idea generation techniques
  • Observing, interviewing and storytelling using notes, photography and video
  • Social media marketing and community building
